I think a lot of nostr users sort of don't understand what is covered by hate speech maybe(?) Even the stuff the average Nostr user says on certain issues would be considered hate speech. But you agree with it, so it's not hate speech. But look at what bluesky thinks, that's a bit like consulting the experts who drafted 'understanding hate speech' on un.org

I didn't mean this to sound so patronising. I understand nothing lol

i'm American.

we can say whatever the fuck we want.

N-word too? 🤔 Didn’t US come up with the idea of canceling people not only for their actions, but also for their spoken words and opinions?

you need to know somebody's real identity before you can cancel them.

and you can't demand that a website reveals identity of the user unless the user broke some law.

and it's perfectly legal to say NIGGER in America as well as to deny the Holocaust.

so really you just need to worry about getting doxxed.

If you anon and can do anything, does it make a difference whether you are American or not? 🤣

Perfectly legal... legal if you're black. And if your government wants to know who you are, they will find out. In this sense it is better not to be an American than to be, because your country can get a dissident anywhere in the world...

Hate speech is a vague, nebulous term. There's really no such thing as hate speech. There is just speech that people hate.

Exactly, I agree. And a lot of what passes as normal here will definitely be considered as hate speech elsewhere. So this notion of 'dealing with it' is also quite confusing.

We don't "deal with it" here at all. We just ignore it. Every client has a block feature too. Nostr is the correct answer. Censorship is problematic. Especially when the definitions of hate speech and misinformation are always changing.

What worries me is that our Nostr devs may find themselves getting sued in an EU or UK court for not implementing censorship. They're already threatening to fine Twitter. They don't know about Nostr yet but it will get their attention if it grows.

I'm just saying the 'it' of the it lol... Probably isn't the same as what is covered elsewhere, is all. A lot of what is called hate speech on eg bluesky wouldn't raise any objections here. In fact it may be celebrated. It's just curious what the It is here and what It isnt lolol

Yes a lot of normal discourse here would be considered hate speech on the centralized socials. My opinions about the transgender movement would get me banned elsewhere but here it gets me likes and zaps.

Yes, that is a good example of what I'm grasping incoherently at.
