Another rainy drive.

It is not rainy today, but I had some colors left over from yesterday. I think I'm getting the hang of #gouache finally. 😂

If you’re struggling with gouache specifically because of its water solubility, Holbein makes acrylic based gouache (lovingly named acryla-gouache) theatre a great stepping stone into gouache ig acrylics are something you feel more comfortable with. Once they dry, the colors won’t lift!

Alternatively, a cheaper option while you learn is to try using a fixative to seal the layers of regular gouache; it definitely might help you get more comfortable with the medium, too!

Thank you for the suggestions! I did not realize there was acrylic gouache. Is there a difference between just acrylic paints?

My problem with gouache is that I've been treating it like watercolors 😂 I'm finally starting to really use thicker layers of paint. I don't think its necessarily wrong to treat gouache like watercolors, but I feel it defeats the purpose of using gouache.

I definitely treat gouache more like watercolor as well. I tend to dilute them because I like the painterly watercolor feel with the richness of gouache.

There’s no real rules to art, unless you’re in school I guess, haha… the biggest difference between acrylic-gouache and regular acrylic paints, to me, is its smoothness and flexibility with being mixed, diluted, and its user-friendliness when it comes to experimentation.

It’s a good stepping stone until you feel confident with how gouache feels and will help you learn when to stick with deeper opacity vs diluting, but your mileage may vary 🎨

Yea, there are no rules. I just want to learn how to use the tools effectively to further improve my art. I can make acrylic paintings look like watercolor as well. But then again what's the point of using acrylic? I think it is interesting to use the paints for their strengths.

My profile picture, as well as this doodle, were both painted using the acrylic gouache, so you can get an idea of how it looks diluted. I agree that you should use each medium for its strengths, but experimentation is what breeds new discoveries in art (and life)! #gouache #acrylicgouache #acrylagouache 🌻

Yea for sure. I often don't use things as intended. This sketch was made entirely out of highlighters 😂 highly doubt they were intended for city sketching. It's just what I had on hand.
