The IRS caps your capital losses at $3k. That is absolutely nothing for any real investment portfolio in a down year. They don’t even let you take your actual losses when you have them, but they will get every nickel out of the inflation boosted gains when you have them. The system is so broken and absurd.

IRS (America)

That’s why I almost try to buy the top - no gains, no problem πŸ˜‚

Not true. 3k is only capped to offset income. You can offset any amount of gains through your losses.

Yes. If you only took losses, you are capped at $3k. That is the problem.

Why 3k?

Who knows? None of it makes any sense.

Fortunately I'm sure the rules are so fair that they also cap your capital gains at 3k... right?
