Institutions are systems of control that tend to get corrupted when they amass too much power.

Organized religion is no exception.

My relationship with God is decentralized

As God intended 😊

Nonetheless it’s still better for institutions to hold power than for individuals.

Are you trying to be as wrong as possible? Well done 😂

Organized religion indeed.

There are no exceptions

once a people go astray from the teachings pf their religion, destruction occurs. atleast thats how it is in Islam.

And who gets to say what the true interpretations of the holy books are?

Vile and evil things are still vile and evil even if it's in some old book.

that would be the Prophets sent by the Creator.

And how will you discern whats vile and evil? Like where is your morality coming from?

Those so called prophets you speak of, are they here with us today to tell you how to interpret the books? No...

When I hear religious nutjobs use their religious texts to justify that men are above women, that husbands can beat their wives, that child rape is legal and that apostates have to be killed - then I use my own judgement and decide those people (and their books) are immoral and evil.

Ofcourse they aren't with us, they're human and have passed away. What we have is the preserved message and tradition of the last and final messenger Prophet Muhammed ﷺ

Hmm can you provide authentic references for your claims? Make sure they are from the Islamic tradition and you read them in context yeah?

And regarding how you determine whats good or bad, is it really just based on your subjective opinions 🤔

Exactly, they are not with us, so humans interpret the verses in those books. Even if the books were perfectly preserved, that has no impact on whether the contents are true, if I have a perfectly preserved 2000 year old book that says "2+2 is 5", that doesn't mean it's true.

Regarding references:

"Men are above women" & "Husbands can beat their wives" = Quran 4:34

"Child rape is legal" = Aisha (the youngest wife) was 9 at the time of consummation (rape)

"Rape of female slaves" = Quran 4:24

"Apostates should be killed" = Quran 4:89 - which might explain why many muslim majority countries punish apostasy with death or imprisonment - see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostasy_in_Islam_by_country#/media/File%3AApostasy_laws_world_map.svg

I base my value judgements on my opinions yes, they are of course heavily influenced by the culture and time I grew up in and are subject to change if I encounter new information or convincing arguments.

Let me ask you a question: Is slavery good or bad? (hint: if you have to look it up in your holy book of choice, you are morally corrupt).
