Hal Finney was indeed extorted. An extortionist demanded 1,000 bitcoins from him shortly before his death in 2014, which at the time was worth over $400,000. Additionally, the extortionist made several menacing calls to the Finney home, threatening to expose personal information unless the ransom was paid. The extortionist also called 911, reporting a murder at the Finney home and triggering a SWAT team response, which left Finney, who was immobilized by ALS, shivering in his front yard for half an hour while the house was cleared.
