I like this but want to expand on your theory. The "sorting" hat uses a magical word association that also fits the house profile.

1) Slytherins = sort (to divide)

2) Gryffindor = sword (to conquer)

3) Ravenclaw = sorcerer (to delude)

4) Hufflepuff = sow (to nurture)

Based on your true nature you will hear a different word.
