Tips are simply transparent P2P Lightning transactions by way of #Lightning addresses; the clients aren't aware of the transaction metadata.

Wallets that implement the Zaps NIP are essentially able to inform #Nostr clients of the transaction in such a way that the overall UX massively improves. They're like social receipts.
