I think they would be rather unsuccessful with this mission simply because I know very few Bitcoiners that would be excited to leave a coinbase channel open to their node. Maybe they could disguise these nodes under different aliases, but if we ever found out we could close them.
In regards of the latest news with Conbase integrating LN.
I would be very careful with this news...
As I warned many times, Conbase is the enemy of Bitcoin, they are not here to make your life easier, but the way around.

Be aware of the wolf in sheep clothes!
This LN integration could trigger a series of monitoring techniques or even KYC your node if you want to withdraw over LN etc.
Also they could start a massive opening of LN channels with as many nodes is possible and through that monitoring txs.
I know this is quite hard to achieve and they will need to put a lot of BTC in the game, fact that do not have enough.
But do not underestimate this danger.
STOP using Conbase, no matter how "happy" you are with them.
