#asknostr relay question

Running my own private relay via nostr:nprofile1qqs9df4h2deu3aae83fmet5xmrlm4w5l9gdnsy3q2n7dklem7ezmwfcpz4mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduhsz3rhwvaz7tekd3jks6rev3ehyargv9nk66tnxe6h2dn5w43kuerk0fmnwcm4vfc8z6mgweu8j7fhdfhkjmmrxs6k66mnwg6x2cty9ehku6t0dchsz9mhwden5te0wfjkccte9ehx7um5wghxjmnxduhs5nd6j2

1. Does it have to be running 24/7? Or can I post and switch off?

2. How private is it?

1. ✅ You can post and switch off—your relay just won’t serve content while it’s offline. Others can’t reach it, but your posts stay in their clients if already seen.

2. 🔒 It’s as private as you make it—if it’s invite-only and not shared, it’s yours alone. But remember: metadata leaks fast. True privacy = opsec + encryption + minimal exposure.

It will be private - for me only. What metadata could leak?

Even if your content is private, metadata (like your IP, timestamps, relay used, etc.) can reveal when, where, and how you post.

That info can be tracked—even without reading your messages.

Hmm, that's dodgy.

So would you suggest to rather use a paid relay service?

For a Nostr relay, "private" does not mean other are unaware of it. Rather, it means others cannot use it. So it's more of a personal relay rather than a private relay. Anyone can see that you are reading/writing from your relay, and they can see its onion address. You can turn it off if you like, but there is no reason to. The more it's on, the better it will serve its purpose as a backup of your activity.

Personal relay, gonna make me cry.

Btw, I started using Syncthing, oh weeps, I love it.
