Yes, but as emergency back-up for communications with family in other states or countries, it is the best option I have found. Do you know of anything better?

HAM radio?

Yes sorry I meant something as simple to use, with little to no learning curve.

Long distance ham requires more equipment and loads of experience and knowledge of transmission laws and still isn’t guaranteed to work depending on current conditions, is that right?

Will cell towers will be up and running in times of emergency?

Some won’t but I imagine some will and these things use all the cell towers/companies so if some are down these radios still work.

If it all goes down then you shit outta luck.

Ham is still the goal but these appear to be an awesome backup.
