Damn, i assumed everyone knows but gladly not.. it’s a YouTube channel calling itself a University which is not and it’s pretending to do educational/explainer videos which is not. It’s wrapping fashist adjacent sexist, racist, classist ideas into animated videos also for kids, presents clearly disproved statements as facts, misrepresents minorities, like having black narrators do racist videos. Kinda nothing original or new about that but their kids channel is already official school material in state of Florida and now trump wants to have it included in curriculum federally
got a random message about the Christopher Columbus episode. We don't use it, but I watched the 12 min episode anyways.
I did not find it particularly troublesome if the kids are a bit older and you can have a thoughtful conversation afterwards - the whole episode is presented as "what Christopher Columbus might say" and "It is hard to sit here 500 years later and judge his actions"
Can I ask what age is then appropriate? How do thoughtfully discuss “better to be enslaved than dead” or altogether why are we comparing slavery to death instead of freedom?
Well, it is supposed to be Christopher Columbus sharing his point of view from 500 years ago. I think that's an important point that gets lost when people simply quote the one line from the video.
I think this is the discussion point to have: "Someone from 500 years ago might have thought this way, but what do you think? How is the world different now? What would it have been like to be alive back then? Why do you think they thought this way?"
The video says grades 3-6. I think my "3rd grader" would probably find is boring because it is mostly dialog back-and-forth, but maybe in a few years.
