I get how the Titan titanic tourism sub getting lost is a dramatic story. And sure I hope they’re rescued. But it’s also kind of weird how we’ve got a global story and a huge effort to save these five people who clearly put themselves in a risky situation using a game controller to navigate their submarine.

But isn’t it odd we don’t spend that much attention keeping people safe and alive, but once they. Might be lost and trapped, it’s getting everybody’s attention. If we’d spend millions on these guys, imagine what we could do with proactive safety.

Our collective psychology around these things is really odd. We can imagine ourselves trapped the sub. Similar to how we do cave rescues or try and get people out of the rubble after an earthquake.

While I agree with your third paragraph I see things differently for the second one:

more proactive safety often means restriction of freedom. In cases where people with common-sense can understand the risks it can be harmful to put up artificial fences. I’d rather spend money to rescue the ones without common-sense or having bad luck.
