I get how the Titan titanic tourism sub getting lost is a dramatic story. And sure I hope they’re rescued. But it’s also kind of weird how we’ve got a global story and a huge effort to save these five people who clearly put themselves in a risky situation using a game controller to navigate their submarine.

But isn’t it odd we don’t spend that much attention keeping people safe and alive, but once they. Might be lost and trapped, it’s getting everybody’s attention. If we’d spend millions on these guys, imagine what we could do with proactive safety.

Our collective psychology around these things is really odd. We can imagine ourselves trapped the sub. Similar to how we do cave rescues or try and get people out of the rubble after an earthquake.

Yah...

Let's use bitcoin and nostr to get humanity out of the sunken fiat system!🙏😁👍

While I agree with your third paragraph I see things differently for the second one:

more proactive safety often means restriction of freedom. In cases where people with common-sense can understand the risks it can be harmful to put up artificial fences. I’d rather spend money to rescue the ones without common-sense or having bad luck.

They are dead. And I could not care any less

My first thought was Wag The Dog. When they report on things like this, it makes you wonder what is going on that they are not reporting on

Your mention about the game controller shows how permeable to "the news" the public is. It makes people feel better to know there is something to blame for. I find that outrageous.

If this company would have developped their own joystick, you would have seen the same article ending with "...despite the custom designed joysticks that costed millions in R&D".

I don't see the issue using a game controller in there. Airbus uses Joysticks in all their planes... I just hope that systems in general, are redundant as they should be.

I hope these folks are hanging on and can be rescued.

My main concern were the demo videos where they say the only controls are an on / off button and the game controller.

Or we could distribute the millions and let people curate their own ideals of safety without scarcity concerns.
