Is he interested in hardware stuffs? I think that's more of what's around you? We can get him into Linux and some driver code. The GNU C compiler comes with a gray beard and difficult attitude in the package for him too.

We do have lots of older gear around. He has a good amount of experience with C (for his age, anyway).

Yeah man! Parallel stuff is fun, especially if you have old printers around, but since it's logic level you can just stuff wires into the port and make things like leds blink or machines do things by writing to a file.
