The team was always explicit about the trade offs that resulted from various ways of interacting with their tools and strongly advised against utilizing their server infrastructure. It should be noted that they were targeted at the cusp of purportedly resolving the centralized risks associated with whirlpool.

You're not wrong to ask the the questions and I don't deny that they are valid ones. The reality of the situation is that they were behind what were some of the most privacy respecting tools available to the community and made no promises. The time to be skeptical of the project is long behind us now and the truth will likely remain opaque. The lesson is to utilize any tool in a manner that best respects your privacy and acknowledges where you've taken liberty to trust the developers; understanding how you can mitigate this trust.
