I have a similar theory about washing machines. Get the model that runs day and night in a laundromat. Make sure it has dials and switches and LEDs; not a 100-button touchpanel. SpeedQueen sells a model like this, and it even includes a manual override to disable govt water usage standards, so you can actually get a clean load.
