Seeing lots of FUD criticizing NOSTR about revealing your IP address (mostly on the bird app).

I'm not a privacy expert so want to make sure I understand the tradeoffs correctly to respond.

Clients or relays could capture / store your IP address, but no more than other website or app you would use.. you also have the option of running clients locally such that the the client couldn't capture this information.

A relay capturing / tracking your I.P. address is a risk, but relays can choose to not store this data and you can choose which relays you want to use. If you use a VPN you aren't revealing your IP address.

Regular users of NOSTR have no more ability to capture your IP here than on any other app.

#[0] .. does this sound accurate?

I would recommend somehow using Nostr over i2p then if you were that concerned.

VPNs are quite a bad idea, if yoy believe that they are in bed with the government of their self interests.

Invisible Internet Project - check it out here:

https://geti2p.net/en/

It takes some learning yo setup but a nostr relay should be possible - atleast I think (bar any weird certificate issues)

I highly recommend you use i2pd and not the Java i2p
