Throughout Western history, the Church and the State have been parallel, sometimes-overlapping, often-competing structures. When one became too corrupt or tyrannical, or crumbled into decay and disrepair, the other stepped in and took over for a time.
I think this construct has been the Secret Sauce for the rise of the West over the past millenium.

If the Church or the State are too closely-aligned, then there is no power great enough to support an individual's peaceful attempt at redress.
I think it is bad for the Church to be too large a part of the State. That is actually a tool for weakening and coopting the Church.
