I figured they'd buy bitcoin, but with freshly printed fiat -- didn't think they'd tap the gold reserves
Think through the idea this is a US-sphere vs China-sphere trade war.
The US has policed the seas globally since the Soviet Union fell.
Will the US police the global seas in this new world or will countries/blocs have to do it themselves?
If you have to do it yourself then former allies are suddenly enemies.
Who wants to ship physical gold around the globe in this system? Who wants to ship Bitcoin and has an advantage on holdings of total supply?
