The myth is just like any other social factor, say stress or peer pressure. It may stimulate some people to action, others it may turn into depression, depending on individual thresholds.

The true disaster happens when your self-confidence is built exclusively on the myth.

This is when Farage believes in a myth where he stands for democracy “against a fascist Europe”, and where Russians believe in a myth where they stand “against fascist Ukraine”.

Or, even worse for them, when Russians believe they can’t lose the war “because Russians lost no wars in the past”.

I think Girkin (or Kurshin) once pointed out in horror “but wait, if we can’t lose by default, then why should we even try to win with our hands?” which perfectly reflected the state of Russian army driven by the mythology.
