It’s going to be weird when a movie seems outdated because the cars still have steering wheels.

i hope that we stop using cars and roads first. gravity control is the key missing technology. it also solves the problem of collisions because objects with low weight have low collision force.
Perhaps I was thinking too small. I was still on the ground and you are using gravity tech.
i don't think that gravity tech is that far away. there has been a lot of research producing interesting results relating to affecting inertia without brute propulsion (ballistic, newtonian equal and opposite stuff).
it's a much better problem to attack than trying to push the limits of ballistic impulse devices. i'm pretty sure it's possible to do it with an as yet not fully understood property of electrons.
if it costs around the same energy to nullify the effect of mass on inertia as it costs to move the mass using ballistic or aerodynamic lift techniques, then why would you propell these heavy things to be able to smash into stuff if you could just nullify the mass and allow the objects to move with less ballistic impulse forces (ballistic and torque, to include wheels, but why use wheels if you can artificially reduce the weight and thus cost of aerial motion?)
