Filtering at the edge device (client)iss the way. Leave the data feed alone. It's not our data to touch. Sys admins and service providers have a nasty habit of thinking they own what's on their server.
Host your own relay and control it yourself. That isn't even hard.
Not for us. It is hard for most. Just put it in the client. Its harder but the right thing to do.
Then stop complaining and start do a research or LEARN how things ACTUALLY worked.
Once you know the [ACTUALLY] part, You will know why this and that was somewhat impossible to achieve, the risks, and et cetera.

Some client already has local relay. But if you mean something like talking to other client's relay like direct peer to peer, You may like to take a look at Scuttlebutt. But i should warn you that it's going to be painful to use for the first timer, But it's exactly the thing that you are looking for:
1. Shits is being stored right in client
2. Talks peer to peer
3. Full absolute control
With the trade off:
1. Hard for newcomers due to how it technically works.

Scuttlebut may or may not be what i am looking for will look. As for your objections, sounds like the client is still immature so shoulnt hold that agaist it and as for the convenience for newcomers bit . . . freaking can't stand appeals to convenience . . . just do it right and grind it into shape. Centralization is and always has been a shortcut.
This is not the first time I have watched this go down fren. Community groups, an NGO, hell I even led the Oracle DB side of a PeopleSoft migration ended up causing the same issues within the organisations as the central system rearranged the whole work culture.
We dont have to argue. You can just watch it go down. Like I said though. Doesnt really matter. The web that nostr is designed for is about to get wiped out over next 5 ish yrs. The interface defines the experience and that interface will behind a personal llm. This is the trend. This is where the big dollars are going. It's really an atack vector on Google as far as rest of big tech is concerned. If you care about freedom though, it is a thin sliver of light when your enemies are fighting each other.
Now for the personal question. All who have engaged in defence of filtering relays have been rude to me personally for no reason. Why? I am being as polite as i can be. Why the snark and sarcasm? Why all of you?
