n/Android, do we want to use Votes or Zaps?

Satellite.earth has implemented the ability to use Votes or Zaps to determine the popularity of the content inside individual communities. The choice is up to all of us.

If we pick votes, that means anyone, including non-bitcoiners, can participate. This mimics Reddit. If we pick zaps, that means people would need to have sats to boost a submission. This would mimic Stacker.news.

Both methods have pros and cons. I am a fan of being inclusive, but I'm also a fan of the value for value model of using Zaps. What are your thoughts?

I love value for value, but a small minority of wealth majority may dominate a space if one is not careful. A minimum threshold would be good, but maybe capping individual influence is in order as well.

Not really , after a few decent posts you would have plenty of sats of your own to sling around.

I think it depends on the community behind the platform, Reddit was always good at self moderation of content through the voting system. Zaps would be the “awards” that Reddit has

People can also use that metric to decide whether the comment is valuable if they choose, I was always a fan of Reddit’s voting system though

What about allowing both but weighting Zaps by some ratio. For example, every 100 sats would be equal to 1 vote.

It's one or the other.

I get that this is true on a protocol level, but why couldn't a client do this?

Zaps v Votes

Zaps necessary. It's the whole point. A person must put money where mouth is. Without some cost, spammers win.

Weighting

Arbitrary. Must come up with the 'perfect formula.' Only certain personality types think they have the 'perfect formula' for everyone, and we don't want them to lead us.

Capping

Arbitrary, Must come up with the perfect maximum cap.

As with everything, the choice is best placed in the hands of the individual. The platform should not decide, it should give options. i.e. I want to see what has been zapped at least 1 penny, with no weighting. Or I want to see everything zapped in order of how much it has been zapped. Or I want to see everything liked in order of how many likes, or everything liked at least once, or everything that AI determines is written with correct syntax and has a 10th grade level vocabulary or higher but has not been zapped or liked... etc

Since these are moderated communities, spammers can't win because mods control the content that gets put into the community. They curate it for the community to prevent spam. Does that change your response?

I dont really think we need to monatize everything. Like are fine with tipping being optional.

Zaps or die. Skin in the game

Zaps makes everything too transactional. But we should have a only zap client and a only votes client.

Votes.

Votes, I'm tired of the BTC echo-chamber

Votes = People feel more engagement which leads to more engagement

Zaps = Higher signal per engagement, but may feel like ghost town initially.

Could we have Zappable Votes?

Everyone can vote - when clicking 'Vote' an option to zap appears 'do you want to zap?'

Result has 2 columns, Votes + Zaps

I think this is the best solution

#Zap, but only 1 sat/zap per person.

IMO having some sats is not that difficult on #Nostr, even directly asking for 5/10 sats just to vote could be a push to Bitcoinization and for value4value engagement.

Votes.

It's got to be Zaps. If you can wrap your head around "reddit awards" you can wrap your head around sats.

Use both

I think it should be up to the client. For example you have the option to switch between Hot and Top, right? You should also be able to switch the ranking between votes and zaps.

Essentially the client could support:

-hot with votes

-hot with zaps

-top (day/week/etc) with votes

-top (day/week/wtc) with zaps

Then it's up to the client/market to know which ranking is more used/popular, whilst supporting both, and it's up to the user to use whichever they think is best for them..
