Composting for Dummies like me 🍃

The Steps:

Bought trash cans

Drilled holes all over

Added food / paper waste

Added some leaves randomly

Mix once every 2 weeks or whenever I remember.

Stop using one and wait.

Left is active daily composter. Right is not used for ~2 months.

The big upgrade I did this year was get a second trash can so one could sit while I use the other.

You can throw coffee grounds straight on the ground - though that works better in the south, than in Maine. In North Ga, coffee grounds vanish into the ground within a couple of days. In Maine it can be a few weeks. It does wonders for the texture of the soil. (And, Coffee Grounds (from hot brews) are not acidic. The acid goes into the cup. I don't know if that holds true for the grounds from cold brew. They might be different.

Just an observation... To make a better compost, take it off the stones and add some holes in the bottom to let earthworms and microbes in from the soil to help make the compost "better" with their castings etc.

I've been using the trash can method for about 6 years now, though I've been less judicious the past year on segregating the active and resting bins, which resulted in a lower yield of usable compost this spring. We're getting ready to move and I'm debating scaling up to a more traditional setup but the two-bin method is hard to beat!
