Redoing an #introduction post, since I am back #follow !

Over a decade working with @DoctorsWithoutBorders before that I was freelance journalist and photographer.

Long list of past lives includes but not limited to: logistician, first responder, journalist, wilderness guide, survival instructor and hostile environment trainer.

Posts vary but are often related to humanitarian aid, gardening, resilience, #climatechange or wilderness type stuff.

Has #mastodon gotten more quiet? I know personally I stopped checking in much at all. Found myself falling back onto Reddit to find answers to questions.

Do we wait until Twitter or Reddit have another scandal to get another flux of people here?

What are peoples new favourite things to #follow here?

Woke up early and couldn’t get back to sleep. So perfect excuse for a solid walk and some #foraging

Wasn’t until talking to a friend did I rĆ©alise that maybe having ā€œretiredā€ tea pot once I get too emotionally attached to them is a unique thing… making shrines with them is completely normal right? #tea #TeaMonksAreWonderful

nostr:npub1zc6yk7hvnlkh0e099mdvytw8d9h654ez5x2v73rjrwvmehrrgsvsnnux0z sweet thanks! Great feedback. Big fan of Finland. Eager to get out there sometime!

I know as Tom says, this is a one off given the very specific circumstances. But there is something so #solarpunk about the cars in this video. Simple, handbuilt, made to be repaired, made to last. Made to go slow at more human speeds.

Just an observation... To make a better compost, take it off the stones and add some holes in the bottom to let earthworms and microbes in from the soil to help make the compost "better" with their castings etc.

nostr:npub1fk2jyjkty3uqe9mz4seppedsvgzrsutztj0favz0u5gxrhlypehs4v5l0c honestly would prob help now but the dirt was a dust bowl when I set it up. Good advice!

nostr:npub10lcwh99sec63zvf22e8m2swpe03ahaey8lkc6pnk7cl9nmn8u6rsxm7wpc great setup! I've been using the trash can method for about 6 years now, though I've been less judicious the past year on segregating the active and resting bins, which resulted in a lower yield of usable compost this spring. We're getting ready to move and I'm debating scaling up to a more traditional setup but the two-bin method is hard to beat!

nostr:npub10kpejapvt6u8m7ls45aspdg9935v50fqegm6fq4ex8n2v3ajavgqz80rjj the second trash can made all the difference for me. With the heats we had it also teally kicked production into gear.

You can throw coffee grounds straight on the ground - though that works better in the south, than in Maine. In North Ga, coffee grounds vanish into the ground within a couple of days. In Maine it can be a few weeks. It does wonders for the texture of the soil. (And, Coffee Grounds (from hot brews) are not acidic. The acid goes into the cup. I don't know if that holds true for the grounds from cold brew. They might be different.

nostr:npub13aw502c3fexj29lc27squr0m02qfcjkqfwz4e32kh39r9u3nd69snlkayf had a verma compost in uni. Never got into it too much. I know they are simple. But I need stupid simple really. I don’t drink coffee but when I have guests I use the grounds to keep the cats away from the mulch in the back :)

Composting for Dummies like me šŸƒ

The Steps:

Bought trash cans

Drilled holes all over

Added food / paper waste

Added some leaves randomly

Mix once every 2 weeks or whenever I remember.

Stop using one and wait.

Left is active daily composter. Right is not used for ~2 months.

The big upgrade I did this year was get a second trash can so one could sit while I use the other.
