It was. Especially garlic for me. I like to grow my onions in clusters of 3. That way they stay medium size but I get an overall larger total yield.

Yeah we do the same. I sow 4-5 seeds per cell in trays, thin to 3 plants and plant them out in clusters. Works beautifully and a great way to pack on more yield into a small space. π€
I go back in forth now with methods, but I think I slightly prefer sowing them in rows in flats. About 4 or 5 rows and several seeds per inch. Then when ready I just scoop out in chunks and stick in the ground. Onions are pretty resilient. Sometimes I just drop the small starts I do not want to plant on the ground, come back a week later and they have rooted and are growing.
