All platforms and protocols have verification requirements of some kind. It could be as easy as him tweeting out his npub or adding a NIP-05 verification to his campaign page.

A tweet with the npub is nice for a quick introduction but it should be a NIP-05 IMO.

I agree that is the more enduring/optimal solution as a verification tweet gets buried over time.
