How much have you spent acquiring and maintaining your #bitcoin #node hardware and software so far?

I mean cost of the hardware, cost of the software if any.

I'll go first.

In my case I've a makeshift node and between acquiring the drives, the laptop, replacing hard drives as they break, SD cards and failures as i learned until I got it working well enough, I've "invested/spent" about 700 USD so far.

I have a custom raspi node just had it's 4th birthday.

Isn't better to use a mini pc to run a node ? Like thinkcenter or dell optiplex. The ssd fails after months, years ? There is a lot of writing/reading? There is websites comparing the disks longevity, some disk made for servers and security cam could be better than regular ones for a node.

I've run mine for a bit over 2 years and have had to replace the ssd once. Which means I've had to purchase a total of 2 ssds. the SD cards I've had to change every 4-6 months.

I thought of a laptop because of the built in battery since I live in an area with frequent power outages. Third world rules.

I made the post mainly wanting to see what other people have done.

Maybe in the future I will think about upgrading to a more industrial and more expensive kind of hardware. Or who knows maybe I will got for a prebuild like a start9. But not looking for an upgrade right now

Maybe you can upgrade for a refurbish desktop hardware + UPS power for the power outage, so you can have internet, your node and other stuffs running 24/7

Macmini 2012 late with an SSD i was able to exchange myself, also wsnted to spin a second one but screwed up the motherboard of this 2014 mac mini :-) 800 euro round about, started with a Raspi4 and in the process downgraded this one for network related task that was another 300 on top of

Tried a Mac Mini 2012 but nothing doing so picked up a Pi4 from eBay with a case for about £55 and bought a new HDD (didn't realise it was HDD and it cooked itself) so a cheap SSD and it all fired up. About £150 all in.

Intel nuc 16 GB ram 2TB SSD

700-800$

Have been running it for 3 years an an old MacBook. Then bought umbrel home server, appr. 400 USD two years ago. So maybe around 800 USD.

My old desktop pc still works, but the node on it running a VM on the same exact SSD corrupted the vm drive. Things cant even be copied via clonezilla. So now i have to research "chantools" to recover lots of sats from lightning channels from this node that died over a year ago that has no backup, i just have words.
