Is it finally the year of the Linux desktop? If it’s ever going to happen this has got to be the catalyst…

People don't care about being surveilled or else every year for the past decade+ would have been the year of the Linux desktop.
There have been bad developments over the past twenty years for shure, but this shit is in overdrive now and it's frankly disturbing even to older geeks. We'll see worse encroachments on privacy and the personal space in the next five years than we've seen the past twenty.
And there's still a time after that... 😳
It's a terrifying thought. When the Prism NSA program broke news a decade or so ago I thought it was so far beyond the pale that surely it represented the worst encroachment on our privacy that I could conceive.
Apparently I lack in imagination 😬
Probably not... Some things are too complicated. We're getting close though as most apps are now web apps.
The year of the Linux desktop was 2010. That's when it became usable to the point of being better and more efficient that MS Win.
The linux desktop was always better, still use fvwm2 on most machines.
Just don't use shitty software like adobe or ms office and you're fine.
Thing that hindered linux desktop most was the unwillingness of people to pay 50$ for non-free printer drivers, that's my ipinion.
I've been using Linux off and on since the late 90s as a desktop. It's...not for everyone. Honestly, the best Linux desktop for the average person is Chrome OS. I personally enjoy Elementary OS and Linux Mint.
Yes and no. It was still a little rough around the edges. And if something broke it was difficult to fix. #Linux #Mint cinnamon with #Timeshift is pretty polished today..🐧
Switching hardware or software for most people is like upgrading to a house with better heating or plumbing. It’s definitely necessary at some point, but the friction of the actual move makes it a very slow transition.
