Strawberries under grapes. This is the first I've paid attention to this bed in about a month, holy cats did the strawberries fill in. This is only their second year and I'm somewhat surprisedby how excellent the growth is directly under the grape vines in pretty strong shade.

My plan is to inter-sow a winter-killing cover crop mix (oats, peas, diakon) and maybe weed-whack the strawberry tops the last week of August/first week of September. My thought is the cover crops will basically turn to straw in place while feeding/loosening the soil. After the winter I can step down whatever residue is left upright and let the strawberries emerge through a soft mulch that is less likely to damage the fruits.

Keep us posted on how it goes. I’m interested in seeing how the cover crop germinates among the strawberries.

Will do.

I love it when different crops grow together and complement each other.
