Let’s have Depeche Mode as an example, and although heroin is a monkey that nobody should even consider, the angst and horror makes the better of music composers as when the monkey gone clean, the music kinda turns cheap in comparison. The majestic high, and the longing low appears to be the dynamic to make timeless music.
