With a one-day project nostr:npub10000003zmk89narqpczy4ff6rnuht2wu05na7kpnh3mak7z2tqzsv8vwqk got more upvotes on HN than all other Nostr-related submissions combined, good publicity for us: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40426099

If there is one thing the majority of HN types like very much are these hacky "serverless" "single-page web apps". I'm sure we have a lot of other Nostr apps they would appreciate.

the "global" mind-virus strikes again

😐

neither does arweave lol, they just think it will

what would solve the problem is more work on dynamic, decentralised replication algorithms... which don't exist yet, ipfs is slow and limited, the only successful protocol that kinda almost works is bittorrent which really says a lot, i hope blossom comes to be the solution for this...

the archival problem is just a matter of being able to get paid to keep the giant stash

exactly, it's about incentives at the edges

Archives don't have to be decentralized.

It would be enough to have some centralized archives that fetch data from other relays and expressly aim at being archives that preserve posts for as long as possible (unlike most relays, which have no express aim or policy).

The amount of data would, likely, not even be that large (it's just text), especially if you filter out spam (which you may or may not want to do). The price of storage wouldn't be a significant issue.

what is the global mind virus?

Commenting so that i remember to read the reply

It's a virus that makes the victim believe nostr has a global state or global feed, and when you expect a global state it makes you think nostr is broken when there isn't one

The point about archiving is actually absolutely correct.

What we do need is one or more archiving relays. Luckily, fetching data from Nostr is much easier than fetching it from mainstream platforms.

I think it could be an interesting project for the Internet Archive or the Archive Team.

It probably wouldn't be too costly, either. It would be acceptable for it to be rather slow and also to have a high latency between when a post is published the first time and when it's available from the archive.
