The red panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a mammal native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China.

It is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List

because its wild population is estimated to number fewer than 10,000

mature individuals and continues to decline.

The main threats to the

red panda are habitat loss through agriculture, livestock and

deforestation, illegal hunting and changes in the dynamics of native

species.

Despite its name, the panda is not closely related to the giant panda.
