What’s the best type of hardware/software setup for a bitcoin and lightning node?
DIY or pre-built, mixing, and everything.

I've done many nodes and I've currently settled with an Ubrel installed on a cheap Ubuntu server. It just works. That said, if you have technical skills setting up your own cam be a rewarding experience. The next one I build will likely be https://github.com/fort-nix/nix-bitcoin.

Any recent hardware will work, just use an SSD for the blockchain storage itself as even a spinning disk array takes quite some time to resync and reindex when stored there.
I myself just setup multiple VMs on some hypervisor hosts and call it a day. YMMV.
