Real ID:

In 2005, the US congress passed legislation for this, and it comes into force May 7 2025. It requires states to follow certain practices when identifying and giving somebody an ID. All the drivers licenses issued in all the US states and 5 territories qualify as real ID. If you have a recent valid drivers license, you arleady have a Real ID. The new requirements will be that to fly domestically, visit certain federal federal facilities, and to visit nuclear power plants, then you must show your Real ID.

I don't think this is much different than it already was, is it?. I don't ever recall flying domestically "anonymously". The significant difference IMHO is that ID is becoming federalized (states still issue, but federal government oversees).

For myself, I'll use my passport as always.

You can still travel without ID by driving in your car. I would be much more worried if your country went cashless. In that case you have to use trackable payment mechanisms to buy your groceries. Here in NZ most supermarkets still take cash, but most checkout lines do not... you have to find the checkout line that still takes cash. I think they still have to take cash, but they just aren't setup for that at every checkout line.

you got the facts wrong. regular license is not real ID compliant. but passport is.

you need to UPGRADE your license to real ID, which is actually impossible because there are no available appointment slots ( at least in New Jersey ).

i am actually forced to get a passport just to fly domestically because i am unable to upgrade my license to real ID compliant.

Many states started issuing REAL ID compliant IDs way back in 2008 or 2010. I don't know state-by-state if maybe some states dragged their feet. Just look for the star on the upper-right.

According to https://www.dhs.gov/real-id/real-id-faqs where I got my "facts"

Q: Are all states issuing REAL ID compliant cards?

A: Yes. All states, the District of Columbia, and the 5 territories are REAL ID compliant and issuing REAL ID compliant driver’s licenses and IDs.

on your page click "how do i get a real ID"

you have to go to an office and bring documents, but the problem is the office has no appointment time slots ...

last year i lost my license and had a new one made - it says "not for federal purposes" in the spot where the star should be.

the point of real ID is to prove who you are by bringing in additional documents to prove your identity.

you need to bring a LOT of documents. like an absurd amount. there are entire websites with interactive guides that help you decide if you have enough documents for real ID.

the alternative is to get a "passport card" which is based on your passport book but is the same size as a driver's license

that's what i will try to do

passport card works as real ID within US while you still need passport book to fly internationally

you can of course use your passport book within US as well, but with the card it fits in your wallet

passport is more money than real ID license though, which is probably why they didn't run out of appointments

real ID is very cheap so they have no incentive to offer enough time slots to meet the demand

even with the $10 cost of real ID ( versus hundreds for passport ) the idiot sheep are complaining about real ID costing money and it being a ripoff

oh you don't like paying to process documents ? well enjoy waiting a year for your time slot then.

dumbfucking commies.

honestly the average person is so dumb they should just be lined up against the wall and buried in a ditch.

Are you saying that the US is going to only supply real ID drivers licenses? When I last checked they still had a normal driver's license, but were promoting the real ID driver's license heavily. Is the old one going away on May 7th?

I didn't know people had a choice in the past. I just thought the newer drivers license would all be REAL ID compliant, and if you got a drivers license renewal since about 2010 it would be a REAL ID compliant drivers license. But I don't live in the USA so I'm taking corrections.

all the states did it differently, the only change is now its required to fly i guess.

they are just trying to create additional impediments to people flying.

first it was hands down your pants TSA

then it was COVID shutting down flights

now it's REAL ID and no appointments

it's all just WEF policies to curb CO2

so were the lockdowns in general

so are tariffs

so are electric cars

so is "urbanism"

and on and on and on

it's all just a coincidence though WEF has no power as we all know

I'm waiting for really real ID.

Some states have different "categories" of state ID's. You can have a standard ID or a "compliant" ID. The compliant ID is more of like the Read ID probably that allows you to fly and is renewable like every 8 years rather than the standard 4 years.

I'm a firm believer in cash over credit. I'm the idiot that you see being taught how to use their bank card in line.
