I realized that the social portability protocol at the heart of nostr has not been fully defined anywhere. That would be worth writing up.
Discussion
they were saying in a discord server i am in that activitypub devs are supposedly working on a social portability upgrade to the protocol. im interested in how they are going about it.
Nah. I was in the working group that made activity pub. They havent figured this out yet. Some brave efforts tho!
What is needed is a simple clean explanation of how the identity system enables social network portability, moving from app to app, allows you to keep your profile, your followers, your data, and so on.
Then the benefits, ie getting a consistent experience accross all apps.
We've been distracted by relays, which are actually the weakest part of nostR. There is a part of the thing that is good, and not yet fully explained.
hmmm i see what you're saying. thats why you're saying nostr's final form will be an api that can be linked to any page on the web. you'll keep your digital identity, followers, etc.
you work with berners lee on solid too no? isnt portable identity the whole point of solid pods too? how do nostr and solid pods play together?
Yes, exactly, it's all one big thing. Solid is, to a degree, tied to a domain, but no more than nostr is tied to nip-05.
Nothing that can be done with nostr, cant be done with http. So it all becomes one big thing, as was intended.
Namel, the web.
Maybe nostr:npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6 can expand his How Nostr Works series to include a page on portability
Unlikely
