Remember when movies were good?

How come I have the attention span for a 3 hour podcast with two pasty blokes talking abstract, but I never have the time for a 2 hour feature film?

Did films just become too formulaic?

They all have exactly the same climatic arc, as if that’s a good thing. Cookie-cutter archetypal characters. It’s as if the only difference from one movie to the next is the costumes and sets.

I can’t remember the last time I watched a stimulating film. Probably a decade+ ago?

They’re either towing a certain political view and tend not to do well

or they’re remakes of classics. Harrison Ford and Tom Cruise are still playing roles they did decades ago.

I enjoyed Nick Cage as Nicolas Cage in a Nick Cage movie.

I greatly enjoyed this note. 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼

A screenwriting book named “Save the Cat” is sometimes blamed for this. It seems to propose a standard arc and seems to have been very influential for 15+ years.

Interesting.
