Do you have a specific question? Happy to answer them.

This Justin knucklehead has been fudding for a long time, so there's nothing I'm going to reply to him except for "cry harder".

Oh and Cashu is an option source project with no funding (hope that'll change).

The response to the initial post by #calleπŸ‘οΈβš‘οΈπŸ‘οΈ was a really good explanation of the benefits and limitations of Cashu….

Thnx Calle for the great explanation πŸŒ…

Duncan - as a non-technical person my concern is that e-cash, if it becomes too successful, could weaken the core appeal of Bitcoin i.e. its fixed supply.

I did a quick bit of research and found that Calle has already discussed this in a Citadel Dispatch (25 minutes and onwards). Some notes:

Slow-rug risk: printing e-cash which is not 100% backed by Bitcoin.

Some solutions (not yet perfected, but being worked on):

- proof of liability databases

- automated bank-runs

- integration with a federation so the user is not trusting a single e-cash operator

{Note: I post what I find interesting at a particular moment in time.}

Yes, custodial solutions all carry some risk of debasement. That's why it's important to make them publicly auditable. Good news is we know how to do it now!

Dear nostr:nprofile1qyv8wumn8ghj7mn0wd68ytnxd46zuamf0ghxy6t69uqsuamnwvaz7tmwdaejumr0dshszxthwden5te0wfjkccte9eekummjwsh8xmmrd9skctcqypgdjn7zmpvqc6ptqud9gtutrcc6yq9s2z96h9dr80hss4wl9qwkx3zqtxl , Thank you, Sir, for responding. πŸ™πŸ»πŸ«‚πŸ˜€

I have been reading your posts and those of others about Cashu with considerable interest. I've been "orange" for many years now, and a very strong proponent of the separation of money and the state. A cofounder and I have recently launched a local area bitcoin meetup. We are hoping to establish a strong circular bitcoin economy in our neighborhood. Your reports of existing and future developments in the technology sound very appealing to me for that purpose. Another gentleman (whose nym I forget at the moment) has been testing the use of Cashu over LoRaWAN nodes, and I imagine setting up such a standalone mesh system in our area. I mention all these things so you will know that I am very interested in and appreciative of the work you are doing.

And so, before going all-in on Cashu, due diligence moves me to learn more and to try and understand the ins and outs of Cashu and to evaluate to what degree the FUD leveled against it by nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnyv9kh2uewd9hj7qgwwaehxw309ahx7uewd3hkctcpzemhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumn0wd68ytnkv46z7qpqxvtwx6tduaxnn9v3y7uasskl277achgu0tu2qncmc7hdsz6y2zyqwe9eex or others has any merit in reality. And I see now that you have comprehensively responded to him on the Stacker News thread, and I find your response there very helpful and instructive, Thank You.

In your reply to nostr:nprofile1qy88wumn8ghj7mn0wvhxcmmv9uq32amnwvaz7tmjv4kxz7fwv3sk6atn9e5k7tcpzfmhxue69uhkummnw3e82efwvdhk6tcqyqe3dcmfdhn56wv4jynmnkzzmatmmhzar3a03gz0r0r6akqtg3ggsxvdtaf you have certainly addressed the questions of individual privacy and of the custodial nature of Cashu and consequent precautions when using it. However, in light of recent state attacks on various bitcoin wallets, companies, and individuals, I would greatly appreciate it if you could please address the question(s) of exposure to and risk from predatory state actors for those who would create and operate mints and/or other necessary infrastructure in support of a community using Cashu? If you have already addressed this somewhere, a link or links would be more than adequate.

Thank you again for your work on this;πŸ™πŸ»πŸ’–πŸ«‚ I do appreciate the unfunded, open-source nature of your efforts, and hope that if and as our community begins to deploy the technology, value will return to you.

Thanks for the mention

No funding- this is a lie as Cashu has received considerable funding from some extremely sus-aligned NGO's

He also hasn't answered to the fact he pushes it as a payments spec. Were it simply an account-less Uncle Jim API he'd have some standing

Thanks for responding. πŸ˜ƒ

Question:

Do you have alternate/superior solution(s) to propose?πŸ€”β“

Lightning.Pub

Thank you...

I just read the intro there...

How does this compare to Cashu in terms of:

* privacy

* centralization

* custody

* immunity from state attack

* etc?

Thanks for links, insights, etc.

* privacy

Equal, identity is ephemeral keys, and the anonset is the common limiting factor

* centralization

Better, Pub is designed explicitly to be light and easy to run and more p2p aligned where cashu is more client-server aligned

* custody

Better-ish, it's part of a larger stack to bootstrap self-custody and the nevents can function as an audit log. It's equally ruggable, but less fragile without an ECash gateway handling swaps

* immunity from state attack

Equal to better, this is ultimately downstream of centralization. Pub is Uncle Jim tech where mints are institutional tech

* etc?

The more comprehensive stack is to solve a number of issues with lightning tooling, not just throw a shitcoin over it. Pub enables a bi-directional nostr-native successor to lnurl, a performant and reliable alternative to a Bolt12 dystopia, and presents a divergence from flakey and expensive mobile nodes

Pubs design is wholistic, built along side other parts of a comprehensive platform including ShockWallet, LightningVideo, Sanctum, and more to come: shock.network

Thank you very much for the comprehensive reply.πŸ™πŸ»πŸ˜

I shall continue my studying.πŸ€”πŸ§πŸ˜†

What makes Bolt12 dystopian?

It's Tor all over again, slow and unreliable, will leave new users thinking UX is naturally terrible

It's being pushed by the cloud-focused implementations who can own all the communications traffic

So I see that while I composed my very long "question," several others have chimed in.... Thank you, nostr:nprofile1qyd8wumn8ghj7mn0wd68ytn5dpjhxctdv43kzapwd9hj7qglwaehxw309ahx7um5wgknqv3wv3hhyctxv93hgmmj0yhx7un89uqjqamnwvaz7tmwdaehgu3wv45kuatwv3a8wctw0f5kwtnnwpskxef0qqsxx730rkja9lqewmq5asq036hyq9d0axdmy420r4fh6qyx595amrck9775r and others for expanding the discussion, and thank you again, nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnyv9kh2uewd9hj7qgcwaehxw309ahx7um5wghxvmt59emkj73wvf5h5tcpz4mhxue69uhkummnw3ezummcw3ezuer9wchsqgzsm98u9kzcp35zkpc62shck8335gqtq5yt4w26xwl0pp2a72qavv2wy9vn , for your work and for your explanations.

I will continue my study and hopefully move forward with this, one halting step at a time!πŸ˜†πŸš€
