If I could give some advice to my younger self, it would be this:

Growing up, I was always told that college was a necessity, and I became the first in my family to earn a Master’s degree.

But now, looking back, I’d say: Unless you're pursuing a specialized field like medicine or law, don’t waste your time and money on a degree. Instead, focus on getting experience in the industry you're passionate about, research it, study it on your own, and create your own path.

As my kids get older I think about what I will tell them and how I will guide them on the right path.

I fully agree. I encouraged my younger brother (21) to not waste his time with university, based on his interests.

He started working at around age 17, as I had a few mates back home who could help him find the kind of work he enjoys.

My younger sister (18) wants to become a doctor and is studying hard to go study medicine for free.

I graduated from uni, with a first class degree, but it was really pointless. Most of the benefits I got was due to the fact that I moved to another country to study and had more opportunities because of that, not because of uni.

Like you said. Unless you want to study a handful of things, there's really no need for university. Doing a course, an apprenticeship or going to trade school is much better.

I totally agree. If it's a trade, you can usually pay out of pocket and skip the student loans while gaining real experience in the field you want.

For someone like your sister, I get that a degree is necessary—that makes sense.

I really think we need to start teaching this to the younger generation, highlighting the value of practical skills and different career paths.
