On the topic of painful nostr: nostrudel is impossible to use with a single paid nostr.wine relay. It constantly loses the auth and it's not easy to reconnect.

Recommendations for open source MacOS clients that work well with auth? (desktop or web)

Honestly the only Mac/iOS app I know of that works well with AUTH is Nostur. https://github.com/nostur-com/nostur-ios-public

Damus works ok for most things but it does not handle AUTH race conditions or CLOSED messages correctly so it loses initial filters that it doesn’t retry making the notifications/DMs inconsistent.

I can’t stand any of the web clients tbh.
