Post.news is shutting down, it was a well funded alternative with a focus on news with micropayments. They had a growth hack where you needed to post a link to your post.news account from twitter in to activate your account.

My take away that when you build a social media app as closed source and centralized it can be expensive to build and run. When the money goes away it can’t just survive on its own supported by the community.

Nostr would survive and grow if we lost all the funding going in to Nostr from investors and donations from nostr:npub1sg6plzptd64u62a878hep2kev88swjh3tw00gjsfl8f237lmu63q0uf63m. The clients and relays are open source and cheap to run. Media servers like nostr.build cost money to run but can be community funded, and if it goes down we’ll be able to switch to alternatives.

I never used Post, but it sounds like we could turn this into a chance at picking up some devs if they'd be interested in building social tools once again.

Yeah we should do some promotion / outreach because we’ve got a bunch of good long form nostr apps and the journalism accelerator starting soon.

These days, finding a value proposition that generates true network effect is difficult stuff

And Post.news was really slick

I wonder how BlueSky and Threads are really doing

You're more optimistic than most, that's good to hear 🫡

I agree.

post.new is just a fusion of Twitter's already powerful features. its user base completely overlaps with Twitter users, so it cannot survive. the same will be true for mastodon and bluesky. what makes nostr different is the integration of Bitcoin and lightning network protocols, which is nostr's most solid foundation.

bitcoin is nost's largest niche market. The future of nostr is exciting.

Mastodon will survive because FOSS community calls it home

and you are an AI

What?

Another tree fell silently in the forest ... https://artifact.news

Artifact’s AI algorithms sucked. You read or like one article and then all of a sudden thats all you get. Also writing something about articles you share and being more intentional about what you want to share is important. A fully automated system is a bit soulless.

"we will easily self-host our own media [once https://vaporware.network releases their public beta later this year]"

fixed one little piece of that for you.

users should host their own content and it should be stupidly trivial to do.

Why did it shut down?

A client along the lines of wikifreedia could be interesting for news.

- facilitates multiple perspectives on topics / events

- leverages web of trust to give user centric ratings

Get the headlines and short versions for free, pay for detailed reports.

When dNews nostr:npub1l2vyh47mk2p0qlsku7hg0vn29faehy9hy34ygaclpn66ukqp3afqutajft ?

Wow

so nostr jumped to the fourth position now?

There’s no cheap or expensive 👀
