no one understands the lost productivity of siphoning thousands of 145+ IQ college grads to build order flow algos that can frontrun retail trades by another millionth of a second.
imagine the advances in genetics, robotics, aerospace etc 
The real question is what causes the repricing of these jobs? The inability of financial firms to game the system and steal/create billions in fake money? Doesn't this cause the financial system to collapse? You can't just pay aerospace engineers, chemists, and physicists that much more so that the best minds want to go there. It's a quite a problem.
