#Nostr cannot censor you. But you can be blocked access to #Nostr by the government, ISPs, etc.

Use a VPN, always
A VPN is your subscription to join Nostr fr. There are also additional βin-app purchasesβ as well if you want them.
VPN is great but not needed for Nostr at the moment. At least where i am π
Everyone needs a VPN for privacy purposes if you use Nostr, no matter where you live.
I definitely know its good to use but I dont believe many are trustworthy.
There are a few very reliable ones. Nord is a no go.
Most people around here use Mullvad and IVPN.
What do you think of Proton?
I think Proton is compromised. Most likely a 3 letter agency. I still use them though.
Proton was built by the CIA. Perfect honeypot for them. Everything monitored and collected.
Agreed. I wonder how it all works though. Proton is encrypted. Is it just meta data they are after? Most emails sent through my proton go to a gmail or another provider so not encrypted anyways. The thing for me is i think proton will protect the emails better than gmail would, even if spied on. Google would sell your data, i doubt the government would.
Good question. I donβt know.
There is a case of an activist being identified by ip address while using Proton Mail. While the content of the email was never exposed, Proton released a statement that if the user in question had been using Proton VPN as well as encrypted mail there would have been no possible way to identify the activist by the French government. Powerful adversary and the encrypted data remained locked. I was impressed.
That is indeed impressive. I actually avoided using both Proton Mail and Proton VPN together because I didnt want all my eggs in one basket but this is making me reconsider this combo.
You can also run the VPN on a wired router with a software kill switch, then run a Tor proxy on your computer. While the VPN will know your identity and encrypt the traffic from the router to your ISP, the traffic from your computer will be Tor encrypted and unreadable to your VPN provider. Some software can route traffic around computer based VPN software and proxies, but a router based VPN eliminates that potential for an IP leak. Itβs also possible to access Proton through Tor and set up a free account for anonymous emailing.
It is a pain, but there is a way to use Proton to send encrypted messages to non-proton users if end to end encryption is important in the use case.
Do you have any evidence that this is the case or is it your hunch?
Random Mac address, Tor and public WiFi for the fall back plan....π
How a random mac address?
Linux & Android (open) support randomising your Mac address to avoid device finger printing.
Know how to do this on Android?
Used to be:
go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi.
Find the wireless connection you want to configure and tap the gear icon next to it.
Go to Advanced > Privacy and select Use Randomized MAC.
I've been running grapheneOS for a few years and it default on.
