I often have a hard time picking out all the lyrics on the first several listens, though, so I can't speak to that as directly.

One thing I do notice is that many metal bands treat the voice as another instrument in the arrangement, rather than the sole star of the show. It cooperates along with the instruments in telling a story or conveying meaning.

Contrast that to vocal-heavy pop groups.
