It's a way to display various items on your profile such as being an early adopter to a relay, a client, or attending a conference. But really it could be for anything.
Derek, do you have “the One Badge to Rule them all”??? It’s a totally safe badge I created. By accepting it you won’t be compelled to send me all your mining rewards. That’s ridiculous, no badge could do that, 😂😂😂, why would you even think that. Trust me it’s totally safe, just wear it.

People are awarding them to users on https://badges.page and https://nostrbadges.com Anyone can create them and award them. It's up to the user to accept it.

you'd need to use a browser with an extension like Alby or nos2x. these extensions act as a signing device and hold your private key so you don't have to enter it into the website.
Will it lead to a situation where certain notes/features are visible or accessible only to people with certain badges? That's be a shame
