I don't know anything about fish tanks, but it looks like some of the diy filtering solutions are a lot better than store bought stuff. From what I can tell you want a bio mesh, activated carbon, and a water polisher. There's other stuff for fish that people add, but I'm about to start diying my dogs water filters because they suck.
