What is better Simplex.chat or Keet.io , and why ?
Discussion
At least the first one is Foss https://github.com/simplex-chat/simplex-chat/blob/stable/LICENSE
My experience has been that SimpleX seems very secure but it utterly unreliable. Notifications work one time, and don’t four more.
You are limited to one device (crap) messages sometimes take forever to send (crap) and I don’t know if I got a message (crap).
I moved to Telegram. I’m not guarding state secrets.
Yep but it's a matter of principles...
You don't keep states secret in your house and yet you have curtains and maybe a garden hedge. Furthermore you are not keeping state secrets until you are, cause the law changed.
Privacy and encryption should be by default but the tradeoffs (simplicity, fluidity etc ..) are complicated (even if not a really big deal) to be honest, for now
Telegram and several others are e2e encrypted. Metadata is the only advantage of SimpleX. It has to work.
A safe tool that doesn’t work is still broken.
To each their own. Just sharing my experience. IMO the purpose of a messenger is to message. I was not consistently successful using SimpleX. Snail mail would’ve been more reliable.
Adoption is also a key factor. I was successful in getting my entire family and most of my friends on Telegram. That means 95% of my conversations are now e2e vs before when I had to SMS those same people.
Signal was the goto for a while, but it simply does not support the feature set. Telegram literally powers our video game chats, family coordination of events, etc. It’s been a flawless and painless experience - while maintaining a *reasonable* level of privacy.
In your analogy, SimpleX is like Fort Knox and Signal, Telegram, et al. are curtains and a hedge. 😛
But that’s why we’re free and have choice. TL;DR be prepared to have spotty notifications and only use your phone to message. If those are acceptable to you, then I would say SimpleX in every other way is pretty good.
Check:
www.securemessagingapps.com
Rate the security: 🟩 = 3 🟨 = 1 🟥 = 0
Results:
1. Threema = 85 = the most secure messenger
2. Session = 79
3. Signal = 77
4. Element / Matrix = 59
5. WhatsApp = 34
6. Telegram = 29
7. Apple iMessage = 25
8. Facebook Messenger =25
SimpleX. FOSS and is a tighter product over all.
So the apps are not FOSS but the underlying tech is in the case of keet ?

Yeah read the ToS you can get sued for trying to decompile Keet and trying to figure out how it works. And until they open source the code you dont really know that its working the way it says it is.
Simplex is much better than Keet
But it’s not that reliable yet
It's a different use case
Simplex.chat is more an better alternative than Signal for private discussion and small groups
keet.io is more for video call imo
I like Keet. In my opinion, it's the best way to transfer files between computers.
I prefer SimpleX for communication on my phone. My opinion is biased though. I have been unable to update the keet app because the Aurora Store broke. I'm a CalyxOS nerd. Graphene OS nerds can't download it either.
We can download SimpleX on f-droid.
Keet says they will open source it in the future, but I think this gives the Network Effect advantage to SimpleX. The privacy nerds promote these types of communication protocols because they're locked out of the app stores. The Apple nerds can use SimpleX too.
That's why I think most bitcoin nerds will converge on Simplex, because it has the largest potential reach.
I still use Keet on Linux, but mobile communication is more convenient. But who knows, maybe Kim Kardashian starts using Keet and all my models are destroyed.
