Every once in a while I find someone that I was following and am no longer following for whatever the reason. It's annoying. i.e someone that I've been following for 6 months recently disappeared from my contacts. Very weird.

Did you look at https://metadata.nostr.com to see if your old list is still there?
i hate that website. it used to overwrite your LN address with a random one assigned to you from LNBits. i lost hundreds of thousands of sats because of that.
i also learned a lesson though. don't blindly click allow without reading what the event is writing to your profile.
