So I've just about given up on zaps since in order to get a Primal wallet I need a wallet already to pay the lightning invoice and yet I can't find a laptop wallet that offers a service of paying QR code invoices. Does one exist?

I don't use Primal, but does it need to be a Primal wallet? Wallet of Satoshi, coinos, Minibits, etc are all "free" (as in, you pay nothing to signup and get a ligthing address to use on Nostr).

What lightning invoice do you need to pay in order to get Primal wallet? It is free.
I stopped f-ing around with things like coinOS because PWAs never stay running in the background. I switched to npub.pro for recieving and get it as cashu ecash.
For most, and to make it as simple as possible, I recommend minibits wallet for both send and recieve zaps.
Connect your nostr client to minibits wallet with NWC. Use the included minibits lightning address (on the minibits 'contact' tab) for recieving and it gets stored in your minibits wallet. Your sats can be reused for zapping in the same wallet.
You can keep your minibits on your phone, but access it from your desktop nostr client, they talk to eachother with nostr protocol.
