It's interesting that the "dark forest" idea was popularized by a Chinese scifi author. Scifi from the US has generally been optimistic about first contact (ie. Sagan)

Does this reflect historical/cultural experiences of cooperative interactions with external parties being net negative vs positive? or just realpolitik thinking vs fantasy writing.
